Colorado Funders Roundtable: The Future of Local News

Wednesday, October 16, 2019, 9:00 - 11:00 AM

Across Colorado, a movement is afoot to chart a new path for local journalism. Having witnessed newsrooms shrink and shut down, many reporters, entrepreneurs, residents, and philanthropists are joining forces to reimagine what local news can look like, and how it can better serve the state’s diverse communities – especially rural areas that are increasingly becoming “news deserts”.

On Wednesday, October 16, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. please join the Philanthropy Colorado, the Gates Family Foundation, and the Colorado Media Project for a luncheon and roundtable discussion that will explore:

  • New ideas and pathways for funders to work with mission-driven newsrooms in communities across Colorado to address the crisis in local news
  • A vision for COLab – a collaborative newsroom with 10 Colorado journalism organizations opening in 2020
  • The latest from other local news initiatives, including the Water Desk at CU-Boulder, Kaiser Health News, and others
  • How to join NewsMatch Colorado, an effort to build sustainability of local nonprofit and mission-driven news via year-end fundraising

Prior to the luncheon, we will distribute a new white paper, “Local News is a Public Good: Public Pathways for Supporting Coloradans’ Civic News and Information Needs in the 21st Century,” and Mike Rispoli and Craig Aaron from Free Press/News Voices will be in town for this luncheon and other events.
Breakfast will be availible from 8:30 - 9:00 a.m., and have a Zoom call-in available – link to come. Seating is limited to 30 attendees. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Swiatek, Philanthropy Colorado at aswiatek@philanthropycolorado.org or Melissa Milios Davis, Gates Family Foundation at mdavis@gatesfamilyfoundation.org
