Monday, March 15, 2021
We are thrilled to announce that Sylvia Kamau-Small has joined Philanthropy Colorado as our new Director of Equity and Impact. In this role, Kamau-Small will direct program development and work with leadership and the team on implementing key areas of our recently approved strategic roadmap

Over a decade at Kaiser Permanente Colorado, Sylvia held various positions related to its health equity, grantmaking and community relations work. She co-led strategy and design of the Community Health Equity Team’s mission, vision and road map. She also led efforts to engage in a thoughtful examination of grantmaking strategies for inequitable practices with the aim of eliminating bias and disparities. She was selected as one of two Colorado representatives to participate in the creation of a national equity and grantmaking toolkit and served as the Colorado representative on the national equity team to provide insight for the development of a common grant application. In her time at Kaiser, she took part in Philanthropy Colorado programming and was a member of COFIE (Colorado Funders for Inclusiveness and Equity).

After leaving Kaiser, Sylvia joined Susan B. Komen Colorado to serve as its Director of Mission Strategy. In that newly created role, she led the implementation of a mission pivot for the nonprofit organization and was a highly regarded member of the senior leadership team. She has a Master of Science in Health Services Administration and Management from Regis University and graduated from University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelors in Sociology and a Minor in African-American Studies.
